About the work

About the work

"The Global Village - Artists of East Hampton & Eastern Long Island", Guild Hall Museum, East Hampton, New York, April 14 - May 27, 2001

"The Global Village" is funded by Giuppy Nantista, an East Hampton philanthropist who established an endowment for a series to show the work of younger artists. The majority of participants were born in the '50s, with two born in the early '60s. It inclueds Howard Clifford, Peter Dayton, Michael Holman, Christa Maiwald, Rima Mardoyan-Smyth, Dan Rizzie, Peter Sabbeth, Mike Solomon and Gavin Zeigler.

Gavin Zeigler's acrylic paintings are built on layers of objects such as bank checks, keys, obsolete stock certificates, and pennies, as in "Composition in Blue." He paints over the pennies on a wood panel and sands down to produce intriguing glints through the embedded surface, grid-like , in pattern. The pennies trap the paint in their edges and crevices, at the same time imbuing the piece with texture and sheen.

With the contrast of a patterned vertical stroke at the lower part of the painting creating a kind of horizon, the picture reminds us of our favorite Louis Armstrong song, "Pennies From Heaven."

In others, the surface consists of keys, treated in a similar manner. Whether the artist is painting over coins, keys, or stock-certificates, the composition is always determined by a grid-like composition. His works depict variety within repetition. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of symbolism here: the artist is concerned more with formal problems. Titles like "Failure in the System" hint at social commentary in only the most allusive way.
